Building Skills Together: Group Occupational Therapy Programs

Our group therapy sessions are designed to help children build skills, confidence, and independence while engaging in fun, collaborative activities with their peers. While social in nature, these programs can also target a range of skill areas, including school readiness, fine and gross motor skills, life skills, and even food exploration.

Group sessions are run in carefully structured environments and focus on specific developmental goals, such as teamwork, communication, and emotional regulation. With small group sizes and tailored activities, every child gets the support they need to thrive alongside others.

Why Group Programs?

Group therapy offers a unique opportunity for children to develop essential skills in a supportive, peer-based environment. Working alongside other children fosters teamwork, communication, and social understanding, while also allowing for shared experiences and learning through play. Group settings are especially effective for practicing real-world scenarios, building resilience, and gaining confidence in navigating social and everyday challenges.

What makes our groups special?

At The Happy Learners clinic, our group programs are purposefully designed to ensure every child gets the most out of their experience.

We keep group numbers small to provide a supportive and focused environment, with multiple therapists involved where appropriate to maximise engagement and progress.

Each program is thoughtfully planned with goal-specific, directed activities tailored to meet the unique needs of the group. Our therapists work towards measurable outcomes, ensuring every session is impactful, purposeful, and fun. Parents and caregivers are also involved to help extend these gains into everyday life, making our group programs a truly holistic approach to your child’s development.

Where are groups held?

Group programs and generally run out of the Happy Learners Clinic in one of our larger spaces.

When do group programs run?

Groups run at different times throughout the year, based on the needs of our clients. For example, it is common for there to be a ‘Prep Readiness’ group run in January most years. Groups frequently run for shorter periods in school holidays, and occasionally for longer blocks during school terms.

How many children are usually in each group?

Depending on the group goals and ages, we can run a group program for a group of 3-8 children. When there are more than 4 children in a group, we usually ensure we have 2 OTs leading and facilitating the group to better support group dynamics and participation.
